You know how important executive presence is, both to improve your performance and to accelerate your career growth. You understand that your executive presence is a conjunction of five factors; appearance, communication, presence, values and performance under stress.
In this post, we will focus on the third of the five, you being present. We will take up the rest in subsequent posts.
Being Present 100%
“Being Present” is all about your mind being present 100% in the interaction you are in. Your mind is not distracted by what happened earlier or what may happen later. You are in the present 100%. It is about being here, now.
Why is this so important to be present 100% in an interaction? There are two reasons.
- When you are present 100% in an interaction, others sense it and interpret it as evidence of your keen interest in them and the issue at hand. This makes them feel valued. They then reciprocate the sentiment by valuing you in turn. Understandably, they become more receptive to your persuasions.
- When you are present 100% in an interaction, and are not distracted in any way, you are focusing. You are alert to all the inputs; thoughts, ideas, feelings, what is said as well as what is left unsaid. This puts you in an advantageous position to think better and recommend better ways forward. And, when others see how well thought out your suggestions are, their respect for you and receptiveness to your persuasions grows further.
Learn to be present. Be present. And experience your ability to influence, and your Executive Presence grow!
