Be Known The Way You Want to be Known

Branding yourself helps. You become visible and distinguishable. It is a soft way of establishing who you are and what you stand for, without being loud and brash.

In yesteryear’s, this happened naturally. Organisations were small, locations were few, roles were stable, and interactions were face to face. Today’s organizations are global, places are many, functions are dynamic, and communications are mainly over telephone and e-mail. Therefore it is now so much more important to build your brand consciously. Here are simple tips to do just that.

Tip 1 – Be Authentic

Being authentic is being honest about who you are, the kind of work you like to do and do well. You are a unique bundle of abilities and inabilities. By being authentic, you are standing up for yourself.

When you do this, you will be happier and so will be your colleagues. Your superiors too would be more satisfied! They will know what could be reliably expected from you.

Your authenticity will lead to consistent behaviour, further strengthening your brand.

Tip 2 – Be Heard

Do you speak up and ask questions in meetings? If you do, that is wonderful. If you don’t why? Is it shyness or dis-interest or something else? In a world of telephonic and e-mail interactions, how would anyone know anything about you, unless they hear you?

Every time you speak up, others hear you and a mental image of you begins to form. And when what they hear is authentic and consistent, the picture becomes sharper. Of course, speaking up meaningfully calls for preparation. Put in the effort.

Summing up, be authentic and be heard. Your brand will be automatically established.
